Haskap Berry 'Toya®' (Honeyberry)

The most promising Polish licensed novelty featuring large, firm fruits, uniform ripening, and extreme post-harvest shelf life.

'Toya®' is a modern, highly promising Polish Haskap variety, considered by the breeder himself (Korfanty) to be the most promising of his novelties. It is a legally protected licensed variety within the European Union (PBR - Plant Breeders' Rights), registered for legal protection at the CPVO (application number: O S406). It stands out for its large, firm fruits with a characteristic pointed end and an excellent, harmonious flavor. Because the fruits do not drop, ripen uniformly, and have extreme post-harvest shelf life, it is an ideal choice for commercial plantations with mechanical harvesting, as well as for demanding home growers.

Key advantages of the variety:

  • Extreme post-harvest shelf life: This is one of the greatest advantages of the variety. The fruits remain in good condition for more than 14 days after harvest.
  • No fruit drop and uniform ripening: Ripe fruits do not drop from the bush, giving the grower greater flexibility in timing the harvest. A massive advantage is also that the fruits ripen uniformly (all at once).
  • Ideal for mechanical harvest: Thanks to its firmness, non-dropping nature, and uniform ripening, the variety is very easily harvested with combines.
  • Narrow and upright habit: The bush reaches a height of approximately 150 cm. This type of growth is extremely advantageous for commercial plantings because it saves space and facilitates access to the fruit.
Fruit and Harvest
  • Appearance: Large fruits (weight exceeds 2.2 g). The shape is broadly spindle-like, elongated, with a characteristic pointed end. The color is dark blue, covered with a layer of natural waxy bloom. The skin is of medium thickness.
  • Flavor and flesh: The fruits are firm and hard, the flesh is juicy and aromatic. The taste is harmonious, sweet-tart, and very delicious.
  • Harvest period: Mid-early variety.
  • Yield: The source text does not directly state the yield, but given the vigorous growth and designation for plantations, a high and stable yield is assumed.
  • Utility: Versatile (universal). An excellent dessert variety for fresh consumption, but also perfectly suited for any processing.
Cultivation and Resistance
  • Hardiness: Extremely high. The plant is fully adapted for cultivation in USDA climate zone 3 (tolerates temperatures well below -30 °C).
  • Disadvantages and notes: The variety is cross-pollinated (strictly requires planting with another simultaneously blooming variety). A licensed protected variety (commercial propagation is restricted).
