Jujube - (Ziziphus jujuba)

Ziziphus jujuba (Chinese jujube) is a deciduous shrub or small tree of the Rhamnaceae family, native to China. Botanically, it is characterized by twisted branches, often with paired thorns, and glossy leaves with three prominent longitudinal veins. The fruit is a drupe that changes color from green to reddish brown as it ripens. After ripening or drying, the skin wrinkles and the flesh acquires a sweet, spongy consistency reminiscent of dates. Nutritionally, the fruits (both fresh and dried) are an important source of energy (high sugar content), fiber, and minerals (potassium, iron). They are notable for their exceptional vitamin C content, which is often 20 times higher than that of citrus fruits. Their phytochemical profile is unique due to the presence of triterpenic acids and jujubosides, which have sedative and anxiolytic effects (traditionally used to promote sleep). The fruits also contain high amounts of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which is important for cell metabolism.
