Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) 'Alvika'

A promising early variety featuring massive elongated berries, elegant appearance, and high resilience.

The 'Alvika' variety is a modern blue gem among table grapes that immediately stands out in any garden. It was created by crossing the legendary 'Talizman' and 'Velika' varieties, inheriting the best of both: extraordinary size and an attractive berry shape combined with high vigor. It is an ideal choice for growers seeking grapes with high market value, a harmonious flavor, and the ability to withstand both diseases and frost.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Gigantic Berries: Exceptionally large, elongated berries reaching a weight of up to 25 g.
  • Attractive Bunches: Large conical clusters with a weight potential of 1.5 – 2 kg.
  • High Resistance: Excellent resistance to fungal diseases and frost.
  • Vine Storage: Ripe fruits can hang on the vine for a very long time without losing quality.
  • Wasp Resistance: The firm skin protects the crop from insect damage.
  • Self-fertile with stable ripening in August.

Origin and Breeding

  • Crossing: The variety was developed by successfully combining the genetics of 'Talizman' x 'Velika'.

Variety Characteristics

Vine and Growth
  • Vigor: Strong and vital. Shoots grow vigorously and feature excellent wood ripening along their entire length.
  • Flowers: Hermaphroditic and self-fertile. The variety does not suffer from "shot berries" (milledandage).
Bunches and Berries
  • Bunches: Large to huge (average 600 – 900 g, up to 2 kg on older wood). They have a wide-conical shape and range from medium density to loose.
  • Berries: Extremely large (20 – 25 g) with dimensions of approx. 42 x 26 mm. Elegant elongated shape and violet-blue color with a waxy bloom.
  • Flesh and Taste: The flesh is medium-dense, crunchy, and aromatic. The flavor is harmonious and very sweet (19 – 21 °NM).
Resistance and Requirements
  • Diseases and Frost: Shows high resistance to both downy and powdery mildew and has very good winter hardiness.
  • Pest Resistance: Due to the firm skin, the berries do not crack and are naturally resistant to wasp damage.
Harvest and Ripening
  • Harvest Time: Early variety (115 – 125 days). Ripens in the second half of August.
  • Hang Time: One of the biggest advantages is the ability of ripe bunches to remain on the vine for a long time without the berries shriveling or losing flavor.
