Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium) 'Jānis'

One of the first cherries of the season with a delicious taste.

'Jānis' is a valuable Latvian variety whose name hints at its main advantage – it ripens very early, right around St. John's Day (late June). It is the ideal choice for anyone who can't wait for the first cherries. Although the fruits are smaller, they have a beautiful heart shape and a very good, sweet-tart flavor. The variety is very productive, partially self-fertile, and has good frost hardiness of the wood as well as good disease resistance, which ensures a reliable harvest.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Very early ripening: A "St. John's" cherry, one of the first of the season.
  • High and regular productivity: Reliably delivers an abundant harvest every year.
  • Very good sweet-tart taste: The fruits are juicy and flavorful.
  • Partially self-fertile: Will set fruit even without a pollinator, though one will increase the yield.
  • Good resistance: Resistant to fungal diseases and frost (wood).

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Latvia, Dobele
  • Breeder: Dr. agr. Silvija Ruisa
  • Year of registration: 2002

Variety Characteristics

Tree

Growth is strong, forming a pyramidal crown. It is partially self-fertile, but for maximum yields, the presence of another cherry variety blooming at the same time is recommended.

  • Skin: Dark red, glossy.
  • Flesh: Dark red, soft, and juicy.

Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost hardiness: The wood has good frost hardiness. Flower buds can be more sensitive to late spring frosts if preceded by warm weather.
  • Diseases: It has good resistance to common fungal diseases.
Growing Recommendations
  • Suitability: Ideal for gardeners who want to enjoy the first cherries from their own garden.
  • Use: The fruits are best suited for fresh consumption.
