Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium) - Variety 'Agris'

'Agris' is an extremely rare, historical Latvian sweet cherry variety, which is one of the earliest varieties ever bred in this region. Unlike modern, hard commercial varieties, this is a classic "heart cherry" (soft-fleshed) – a cherry with soft, extremely juicy flesh and dark staining juice.

Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium) 'Agris'

It is an ideal choice for lovers of traditional, early, and refreshing summer cherries, intended primarily for quick direct consumption straight from the tree.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Very early ripening (already at the end of June).
  • Excellent, refreshing sweet-tart taste.
  • Very juicy, soft flesh (ideal for children and the elderly).
  • Medium, manageable tree growth.
  • Increased frost resistance (result of targeted breeding).
Origin and Breeding
  • Origin: Latvia. The variety was bred at the "Iedzēni" research station (Madona district).
  • Breeders: Roberts Āboliņš and Aleksandrs Maizītis.
  • History: The breeding program began in the early 1950s. The main goal of the breeders was to significantly increase the frost resistance of cherries and extend their season (to obtain very early and very late varieties). 'Agris' was selected as one of the best out of 100 elite hybrids, where the earliest Western European varieties (e.g., 'Früheste der Mark', 'Kassins Frühe') were crossed with frost-hardy local varieties.
  • Genetics (Compatibility): According to molecular analyses, the variety has the S1S2 genetic profile (belongs to compatibility group I).
Detailed variety description: Plant
  • Vigor: The tree is characterized by medium-strong growth, which is advantageous for maintaining an appropriate crown size in home gardens.
Fruits and Flavor Profile
  • Appearance and size: The fruits are medium-sized. They have a slightly flattened, rounded shape.
  • Color: The skin has an attractive red to deep dark red color.
  • Flesh (Texture): Typologically, it is a heart cherry. The flesh is soft, very tender, and extremely juicy. The juice is dark red (strongly staining).
  • Taste: It is rated as very good. It features a refreshing, harmonious sweet-tart flavor typical of early summer varieties.
Cultivation properties and agrotechnics
  • Ripening and yield:
    • Harvest time: It is a very early variety. Fruits ripen as early as the third decade of June (late June in Baltic conditions). In the Latvian assortment, it is one of the earliest ripening cherries overall.
    • Use: Due to the soft flesh, the fruits are sensitive to bruising and longer transport. They are intended for immediate direct consumption or home processing.
  • Pollination and requirements:
    • Pollination: The variety is cross-pollinated. To achieve a good crop, it necessarily needs another cherry variety nearby that blooms at the same time and has compatible S-alleles.
    • Resistance: Given the breeding intention (crossing with frost-hardy donors), the tree shows good resistance to winter frosts.

Drawbacks of the variety:

  • Soft flesh (heart cherry) – fruits cannot be stored for long and are susceptible to damage during transport.
  • Cross-pollinated (requires a pollination partner).
  • Availability: It is an extremely rare variety, not commonly found in garden centers.
