Primadonna is a modern, patented (US PP12816) variety from the University of Florida (2002), whose name (“First Lady”) reflects its position as one of the earliest varieties on the market.
Fruits (Quality and characteristics): The fruits are large to very large, with an average weight of around 2.0 grams. They are extremely firm and light blue in color. These characteristics make them ideal for the commercial market and long transport. The taste is described as sweet with low acidity, which distinguishes it from more balanced varieties such as Star or Millenia.
Plant (Cultivation characteristics): The plant is strong, vigorous, with semi-upright growth. It has extremely low chilling requirements, around 100 hours, which allows it to be grown even in areas without significant winter. It ripens very early, about 10 days earlier than the reference variety Star. It achieves high yields, averaging 4.5 to 5.5 kg per bush. For optimal results, it benefits from cross-pollination; Star or Millennia are recommended as pollinators. It is resistant to major diseases.
Advantages and disadvantages: Its greatest advantages are its extreme earliness, high yield, and fruits with excellent firmness and shelf life. The disadvantage may be its low acidity taste profile, which may not suit all consumers, and the high risk of damage to flowers by late spring frosts due to early flowering.
