Millennia is another top-quality, patented (US PP20181) variety from the University of Florida (2009). It was created by crossing the Sharpblue variety with the FL 90-3 selection. It is a direct competitor to Primadonna in the earliest variety segment.
Fruits (quality and characteristics): The fruits are medium-sized, weighing 1.6 to 1.8 grams, which is slightly smaller than Primadonna. However, they are very firm and have an attractive light blue color. Their key advantage is their excellent, balanced sweet-sour taste, which is often rated as top-notch and, for many consumers, more attractive than the low-acid taste of Primadonna.
Plant (growing characteristics): The plant is very vigorous, with a unique growth habit – it is semi-upright, but at the same time open and leggy. This open structure allows for better air circulation and light penetration, which contributes to the health of the plant. Similar to Star, Millennia has strong spring leaf growth that precedes full flowering. This gives it a significant advantage in disease resistance. Cold requirements are very low (100-150 hours) and it ripens extremely early, at the same time as Primadonna. It is highly productive, yielding 4.5 to 6.8 kg per bush.
Advantages and disadvantages: The main advantages include a combination of extreme earliness, high fertility, excellent balanced taste, and healthy growth. Open growth may require a specific approach to pruning. As with Primadonna, there is a high risk of damage from late spring frosts.
