Cape Fear is a sister variety of Blue Ridge, introduced at the same time (1990) by North Carolina State University and the USDA. It was created by crossing US 75 and Patriot. Unlike Blue Ridge, it is primarily focused on high production.
Fruits (Quality and characteristics): The fruits are very large, with good color and firmness. The scar after the stem is of good quality. However, the biggest compromise is its relatively average taste.
Plant (Growing characteristics): The bush is very vigorous, highly productive, and quick to bear fruit. It grows semi-upright. It ripens in the mid-early season. Like Blue Ridge, it requires 500 to 600 hours of cold. Its greatest growing advantage is its excellent resistance to stem blight, surpassing all other varieties bred in North Carolina at the time.
Advantages and disadvantages: The biggest advantages are its extremely high yield, very large fruit, and excellent resistance to stem blight.
