Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) 'Aroma Queen'

Everbearing variety with the premium aroma and taste of wild forest raspberries.

'Aroma Queen' is a highly rated, primocane (everbearing) raspberry variety that fully deserves its name. It stands out primarily for its exceptional taste and extra-strong aroma, which very faithfully resembles wild-growing forest raspberries. Beyond its culinary qualities, growers appreciate its upright and sturdy growth, meaning it does not require trellising, as well as its above-average yield and high resistance to frost and diseases.

Key Highlights:

  • Extra aromatic flavor: Fruits taste and smell like true wild raspberries.
  • Needs no support: Strong, upright canes do not require tying or trellising.
  • Everbearing (Primocane): Harvest on new canes in August and again in October.
  • High resilience: Frost hardy down to -27 °C, highly disease resistant (suitable for organic growing).
  • Above-average and reliable productivity.

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Modern European breeding focused on flavor.

Variety Characteristics

Bush
  • Growth: Upright and sturdy. Reaches a height of 1.5 to 1.8 meters.
  • Cultivation: Thanks to its robust structure, no support (trellis) is needed.
  • Pollination: The variety is self-fertile.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Medium to large fruits, typical conical shape.
  • Color: Light red to classic red.
  • Taste: Excellent, incredibly fragrant, a faithful copy of wild raspberries.
  • Usage: Premium for fresh consumption, but also excellent for making jams, marmalades, syrups, and desserts.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Excellent winter hardiness (down to -27 °C), suitable for all, even colder regions.
  • Soil: Requires humus-rich, medium-heavy, slightly acidic, and well-drained soil with adequate moisture.
  • Diseases: Not prone to diseases, low-maintenance.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Location: Thrives best in full sun.
  • Planting: Plant in a 30x30x30 cm hole, about 5 cm deeper than it grew in the nursery (be careful not to damage the buds). Planting distance (spacing) should be 40 – 80 cm.
  • Pruning: Fruits primarily on first-year canes. In autumn or early spring, two-year-old (fruited) canes should be cut completely to the ground. If a summer crop is also desired, shorten the one-year-old canes by half.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Gradual harvest. The first fruits ripen from early to mid-August, and the second wave continues in October, lasting until the first frosts.
