Rowan-Aronia Hybrid (Sorbaronia) 'Burka'

A historic intergeneric hybrid featuring compact growth, extreme hardiness, and healthy, dark burgundy fruits.

The 'Burka' variety is a fascinating creation by the famous breeder I. V. Michurin, who combined the best of two worlds—rowan and aronia (chokeberry). This low-maintenance, compact shrub or small tree is tailor-made for smaller gardens. It offers exceptional year-round ornamental value, enormous frost resistance, and a fantastic crop of healthy berries. Thanks to their high pectin content, the fruits are absolutely top-tier for homemade jams and juices.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Compact growth: Reaches only 1.5 – 3 meters in height, an ideal choice for small spaces.
  • Extreme hardiness: Easily handles frosts down to -40 °C (-40 °F), drought, and common diseases (perfect for eco-growing).
  • Healthy fruit: Dark burgundy berries full of vitamins and minerals, without unpleasant bitterness.
  • High yield: Very early onset of bearing, yielding up to 50 kg from a single mature plant.
  • Self-fertile with high ornamental value (beautiful flowers and fiery autumn foliage).

Origin and Breeding

  • Origin: Russia (I. V. Michurin All-Russian Research Institute). Breeder: Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin.
  • Creation: Created in 1918 as a complex intergeneric hybrid. It is a genetic cross between the Alpine rowan (Sorbus x alpina) and the classic European rowan (Sorbus aucuparia).

Variety Characteristics

Shrub / Tree
  • Vigor and Habit: Low vigor (1.5 to 3 meters). Forms a compact, spherical, and slightly spreading crown. Can be grown as a dense shrub or a small tree.
  • Leaves: Highly decorative, leathery, and variable in shape. In autumn, they turn breathtaking shades of bright red and orange.
  • Bearing and Pollination: Enters fruiting very early (already in the 2nd to 3rd year after planting). The variety is fully self-fertile.
Flowers and Fruits
  • Blooming: In May and June, it produces dense, fragrant, creamy-white corymbs with delicate pinkish stamens.
  • Size and Color: Medium-sized berries (up to 1.5 cm in diameter, weight approx. 1 g). They feature an attractive dark burgundy (brown-purple) color and yield beautiful burgundy-red juice.
  • Taste and Use: Pleasant, sweet and sour. Note: Thanks to its aronia genes, the fruit retains a slightly astringent note, but lacks any unpleasant bitter aftertaste. Due to their high pectin and vitamin content, they are perfect for jams, jellies (great paired with venison or cheese), syrups, wines, teas, and liqueurs. They can also be eaten raw.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: The variety is absolutely frost-hardy, successfully overwintering without any protection down to -40 °C (-40 °F).
  • Diseases and Pests: Exhibits high resistance, making it ideal for organic cultivation without the need for chemical sprays.
  • Soil and Moisture: Grows in almost any soil. It handles drought periods excellently. Caution: The only thing the variety does not tolerate is permanent waterlogging of the roots (heavy, waterlogged clays).
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Location: For the best fruit coloration and autumn foliage, it prefers a sunny location, but it will easily handle light partial shade.
Harvest, Yield, and Storage
  • Harvest Time: Late August to September. A great advantage is that ripe fruits do not drop and can hang on the bush for a long time.
  • Yield: Despite its compact size, the variety is extremely productive—you can harvest 40 to 50 kg of berries from a mature bush.
  • Storage: Harvested fruits have an excellent shelf life and can be stored in the cold for up to 3 - 4 months.
