Rowan-Aronia Hybrid (Sorbus aucuparia x Sorbus melanocarpa) 'Likjornaja'

Historical Michurin cross of rowan and aronia with high yield of sweet-sour juice.

'Likjornaja' is a unique interspecific hybrid that combines the appearance and extreme hardiness of the rowan tree (mountain ash) with the fruit quality of the black chokeberry (aronia). It was bred by the legendary Russian botanist I. V. Michurin back in 1905. The variety's name ("Liqueur") perfectly describes its main use – the dark purple fruits are a fantastic raw material for making juices, jams, wines, and liqueurs. Unlike wild rowan berries, the fruits are edible and tasty straight from the tree. It is an absolutely undemanding, frost-hardy, and self-fertile plant ideal for organic cultivation.

Key Highlights:

  • Unique genetics: Cross between European rowan and black chokeberry.
  • Tasty fruits: Sweet-sour, without the bitterness of wild rowan.
  • Ideal for processing: High pectin content and burgundy-red juice (jams, liqueurs).
  • Extreme frost hardiness: Perfectly adapted to harsh climates.
  • Compact growth (up to 3 m) and self-fertile.

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Russia (Breeder Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin). Crossed in 1905.

Variety Characteristics

Bush / Small Tree
  • Growth: Slow-growing bush or small tree. Visually, it resembles a rowan tree.
  • Height: Compact shape, reaching only 2 to 3 meters (facilitates harvesting).
  • Flowering: From May to June, it produces numerous white corymbose flower clusters.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Small flat-round pomes (1.2 – 1.5 cm in diameter) growing in clusters (corymbs).
  • Color: Dark purple when ripe, juice is burgundy-red.
  • Taste: Pleasant, sweet-sour.
  • Usage: Production of liqueurs, wines, syrups, juices, teas, and spirits. Excellent for jams and jellies (often served with venison, lamb, or cheese). Also used in traditional folk medicine.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Very high frost resistance.
  • Cultivation: Very simple and undemanding. Thanks to high disease resistance, it is ideal for organic farming without chemical sprays.
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Pollination: The variety is self-fertile.
  • Harvesting: Although the fruits are small, growing in clusters makes harvesting easier.
Harvest and Storage
  • Harvest time: Late August to early September.
  • Storage: A huge advantage is that the fruits do not drop after ripening and can hang on the bush for a long time. They retain a very high juice yield even when harvested late and can be stored for several months.
