Raspberry 'Groovy®' (PBR)

A unique dwarf variety with radiant golden foliage and large, sweet berries, perfect for container gardening and modern "edible landscaping".

'Groovy®' (syn. Jdeboer005) is a unique dwarf raspberry variety that perfectly merges ornamental beauty with delicious fruit production. Originating from the Netherlands (bred by Jan de Boer, Vitis-Idaea B.V., published by Plantipp / SAPHO), it is a legally protected variety within the European Union (European P.B.R. - EU 57353). It is an ideal choice for the modern "edible landscaping" trend and for gardeners with limited space. It stands out with its exceptionally attractive, bright yellow foliage, compact habit, and large, sweet fruits. It is perfect for patio pots, balconies, small gardens, or as a decorative and edible garden border.

Key advantages of the variety:

  • High ornamental value: Striking foliage that emerges orange-yellow in spring, turning to bright golden and lime-yellow in summer. Unlike many yellow-leaved plants, the leaves do not burn in full sun.
  • Compact dwarf habit: Reaches a height of only 1 to 1.5 m and a width of 0.75 to 1 m at maturity (after 10 years), forming a dense, bushy plant.
  • Virtually thornless canes: Canes are nearly spine-free (little thorny / thornless), making harvesting safe and easy for children.
  • Extreme winter hardiness: Fully hardy, easily withstanding winter temperatures down to -35 °C without damage.
  • Precocious cropping: Highly productive, yielding fruit in its very first year after planting.
Fruit and Harvest
  • Appearance: Large berries (2 – 3 cm in diameter) of a vivid red color that creates a stunning contrast against the golden foliage.
  • Flavor and flesh: The flesh is juicy. The taste is sweet, aromatic, and delicious (gourmet quality).
  • Harvest period: Primarily classified as a summer-bearing variety, but it fruits on one-year-old canes and under favorable conditions produces fruit continuously from late June through September.
  • Utility: Versatile. Perfect for fresh eating, container growing, compact gardens, or decorative edible borders.
Cultivation and Pruning
  • Position and soil: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist, yet well-drained soil.
  • Pruning: Very low-maintenance. In late winter or early spring, simply prune out old, fruited (dry) canes down to ground level and leave 7 to 10 healthy young canes per linear meter.
  • Disadvantages and notes: Compact growth naturally results in a lower overall harvest volume in kilograms compared to tall commercial varieties. Protected variety (unauthorized commercial propagation is strictly prohibited).
