Pomegranate - Variety 'Salavatski'

'Salavatski' is an absolute legend in the growing world and is considered the global number one in cold hardiness. It is the ideal choice for gardeners who want to grow their own pomegranates in the more demanding climatic conditions of Central Europe, without any compromises in taste or yield. This variety is a symbol of extraordinary toughness, offering top-quality fruits with a refreshing, berry-like flavor profile.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) 'Salavatski'

This genetic gem originates from Turkmenistan, specifically from the harsh foothill valley of the Sumbar River. It was selected by the legendary botanist Dr. Gregory Levin and named after the Russian city of Salavat (known for extreme winters) to emphasize its incredible resilience. Today, it is strictly cataloged in the USDA germplasm collections at UC Davis. It became the global benchmark for hardiness after repeatedly surviving short-term temperature drops down to -24 °C in tests without serious wood damage.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • World leader in cold hardiness: Mature wood reliably withstands frosts down to -21 °C (briefly even more).
  • Resistance to cracking: The firm skin does not crack even in autumn rains and guarantees long storability.
  • Excellent taste: Balanced sweet-tart flavor with very pleasant notes of forest berries.
  • Compact growth: A densely branched bush that responds excellently to shaping pruning.
  • High yield: The variety is self-fertile and produces stable crops.
  • Ideal for BIO cultivation: High natural resistance to fungal diseases without the need for spraying.
  • Versatility: Great for fresh consumption, juicing, and culinary specialties.
Detailed variety description: Plant
  • Growth and habit: The tree/bush is of medium vigor. It forms a compact, naturally and densely branched deciduous shrub that reaches a height of 2.5 – 3 meters.
  • Shaping: It is very low-maintenance and responds excellently to pruning, making it easy to keep at the desired size.
  • Flowering: Striking, bright orange-red flowers bloom gradually over a long period from May to July. The variety is self-fertile.
Fruits and flavor profile
  • Appearance and size: The fruits are round, medium to large. The average weight ranges from 250 to 400 g.
  • Skin: Has an attractive orange-red color. It is very firm, which perfectly protects the fruits from cracking and guarantees long storability.
  • Arils and seeds: They are a beautiful ruby red and very juicy. They contain medium-hard seeds. A firmer seed is a biological trait associated with extreme cold hardiness, but it is not bothersome when eating.
  • Juice and flavor: The juice has a deep ruby color. The taste is excellent, refreshing, and perfectly balanced (sweet-tart), enriched with subtle, very pleasant notes of forest berries.
Growing characteristics and agrotechnics
  • Ripening and yield:
    • Harvest window: Fruits ripen in the second half of October (depending on location and autumn weather).
    • Bearing onset: Begins bearing fruit quickly, usually in the 3rd – 4th year after planting. The yield is stable and high.
  • Hardiness and requirements:
    • Cold hardiness: Record-breaking. Mature bushes with well-hardened wood withstand frosts down to -21 °C (briefly even more). Hardiness increases with age and trunk thickness.
    • Winter protection for young plants: In the first years after planting, it is essential to provide young plants with winter protection (wrapping the trunk and an 8 – 10 cm layer of mulch for the root system).
    • Health: Shows high natural resistance to fungal diseases and pests.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • Medium-hard seeds: The price for extreme cold hardiness (although not as obtrusive when eating as with the 'Kazake' variety).
  • Late ripening: Harvesting in the second half of October requires a long and warm autumn for perfect fruit ripening.
  • Juvenile winter protection needed: Young plants require winter protection for roots and trunk in the first few years.
