Pomegranate - Variety 'Agat'

'Agat' is a pomegranate variety that uses a completely different strategy to combat extreme cold compared to upright varieties. It was bred to grow low to the ground and use snow cover as a perfect natural insulator. In addition to this unique habit, 'Agat' is highly prized for its soft seeds and early ripening, making growing and eating your own pomegranates a reality even in regions with shorter summers.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) 'Agat'

The variety was developed in 1981 at a Soviet research institute in Uzbekistan. The world-renowned botanist Dr. Gregory Levin participated in its development. The breeders' main goal was to create a hardy variety for cooler regions with a low, spreading habit that is easily covered by snow in winter. The snow thus acts as a perfect insulating layer, protecting the wood from extreme frosts.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Early ripening: The harvest ripens as early as September and October, ideal for areas with short summers.
  • Soft seeds: The seeds within the arils are small and soft, making the fruits perfect for fresh consumption.
  • Wintering strategy: Low growth allows for wintering under snow or easy mechanical covering.
  • Compact growth: Grows only up to 1.5 m – absolutely ideal for pots and terraces.
  • Very early bearing onset: The first flowers and fruits appear just 1 to 2 years after planting.
  • High yield: Despite the small size of the bush, the fruits are large, and a mature plant can produce over 9 kg of fruit.
Detailed variety description: Plant
  • Growth and habit: This is a dwarfed and spreading variety. It does not form a classic tree with a single trunk, but rather a dense, compact bush that grows to a height of only about 1.5 meters.
  • Space utilization: Thanks to its small dimensions, it is excellent for growing in large pots on balconies or for dense planting schemes in small gardens.
  • Flowering: Blooms quite early, during May and June (flowering often persists into the summer) with bright orange-red flowers. The variety is self-fertile.
Fruits and flavor profile
  • Appearance and size: Despite the dwarfed growth of the bush, the fruits are surprisingly large. The skin has an attractive yellow-orange color, often with a red blush.
  • Arils and seeds (Huge advantage): The arils are highly transparent (translucent) with a delicate pinkish to red tone. Unlike other cold-hardy varieties, 'Agat' has small and soft seeds that are not bothersome at all when chewing.
  • Juice and flavor: The taste is excellent, harmoniously balanced (sweet-tart). It requires plenty of summer sun to achieve maximum sweetness.
Growing characteristics and agrotechnics
  • Ripening and yield:
    • Harvest window: Fruits ripen as early as September and October. An excellent choice for the cooler conditions of Central Europe, where later varieties may not ripen in time.
    • Productivity: It is highly productive and starts bearing fruit extremely quickly (in the 1st to 2nd year).
  • Hardiness and requirements:
    • Cold hardiness and wintering: The wood shows hardiness down to -18 °C (USDA zone 6b). However, its greatest strength is its low growth – a snow cover protects it from much more severe frosts. In areas without snow, its small dimensions make it easy to wrap or cover (e.g., with pine branches).
    • Location and health: Requires a sunny location well-protected from the wind, and well-draining soil. It suffers from practically no diseases in our climate.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • Slower growth: It takes a bit longer for the bush to reach its final size.
  • Wind protection: Requires a location shielded from strong winds.
  • Sun requirements: Needs hot summer days to reach its full sweetness; otherwise, tartness may be more prominent in the flavor.
