Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) 'Italia'

World-famous Italian late variety with huge clusters and muscat flavor.

'Italia' (also known as '65 Pirovano') is one of the most important and widely grown table grape varieties in the world. It is sought after for its huge, visually highly attractive clusters and large berries with firm flesh. It wins over consumers and growers with its excellent sweet taste, delicious muscat aroma, and superb storability.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Huge clusters (average 800 g) and large berries.
  • Excellent sweet taste with muscat aroma.
  • Very high yield.
  • Excellent storability and transportability (ideal for retail).
  • Strong vigor, suitable for pergolas.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Italy
  • Breeder: Angelo Pirovano (1911)
  • Parentage: 'Bicane' × 'Hamburg Muscat'
  • Registration: Registered in several EU countries (synonym in HR: 'Muskat italija'). 4 clones certified in France.

Variety Characteristics

Vine
  • Vigor: Very strong (vigorous growth). Prefers extended training systems (pergolas).
  • Pruning: Requires long pruning and careful tying.
  • Yield: Very high. To achieve top quality and berry size, cluster thinning is often necessary.
Fruit (Cluster and Berry)
  • Clusters: Very large (average 800 g), conical to pyramidal, winged, medium compact.
  • Berries: Large to very large, oval to elliptical. Contain seeds (usually two).
  • Color: Golden-yellow to amber. Skin has a waxy bloom.
  • Flesh and Taste: Firm, meaty, and juicy. The taste is sweet with a delicious muscat aroma.
  • Usage: Premium table grape for fresh consumption.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Diseases: Moderately susceptible to downy and powdery mildew, susceptible to grey rot (botrytis). Requires protection.
  • Climate: Frost resistance down to -20 to -30 °C (depending on wood maturity). Requires full sun (tolerates partial shade in warm areas) and a sheltered location.
  • Soil: Well-drained, neutral to alkaline, humus-rich. Requires sufficient irrigation and fertilization for optimal results.
Harvest and Storage
  • Ripening time: Late variety (second decade of September). May not fully ripen in cooler regions.
