Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) 'Éva'

Early Hungarian variety with huge clusters, resistant to rot and wasps.

'Éva' is an excellent Hungarian white table grape variety. It is highly valued for its attractive and potentially huge clusters (up to 2 kg), crunchy berries with almost imperceptible seeds, and excellent resistance to rot. A huge advantage for gardeners is that these grapes are not attacked by wasps.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Resistance to rot and wasps (trouble-free ripening).
  • Potentially huge clusters (up to 1.5 – 2 kg with good care).
  • Crispy, sweet, and juicy flesh.
  • Undemanding regarding soil and moisture (handles drought well).
  • Good transportability thanks to firmer skin.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Hungary
  • Breeder: Sándor Szegedi (named after co-worker Éva)
  • Parentage: 'Pannónia kincse' × 'Erzsébet királyné emléke' (1961)

Variety Characteristics

Vine
  • Vigor: Strong (high growth energy). Shoots grow upright.
  • Foliage: Airy. Forms short lateral shoots (tendency to form secondary clusters).
  • Pruning: Short pruning is recommended; with long pruning, it tends to overcrop.
Fruit (Cluster and Berry)
  • Clusters: Medium loose, conical. Averaging 400 – 420 g, but can reach up to 2 kg.
  • Berries: Large, oval (elongated).
  • Color: Light yellow (yellowish-white) with a waxy bloom.
  • Flesh and Taste: Firm, crispy, juicy, very sweet. Seeds are very small, almost imperceptible when eaten.
  • Skin: Medium thick to thin, facilitates transport.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Diseases and pests: Highly resistant to rot and wasps. Average resistance to downy and powdery mildew.
  • Climate: Light and heat-loving. With strong sun exposure, it forms more sugar and has firmer skin. Good frost resistance (although extreme frosts can damage it).
  • Soil and moisture: Undemanding and adaptable. Thrives on heavy and sandy soils. Can be grown without irrigation (low water requirements).
Harvest and Storage
  • Ripening time: Mid-early (mid-August).
  • Yield: Very productive.
