Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) 'Attila'

Traditional Hungarian variety with large yellow clusters and delicate muscat flavor.

'Attila' is an older Hungarian table grape variety that is popular almost exclusively in home gardens. It wins over growers mainly with its excellent muscat aroma, attractive large clusters, and strong growth, making it perfectly suited for pergolas. It is undemanding on the soil but requires warm locations.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Excellent delicate muscat taste.
  • Attractive large yellow clusters with a waxy bloom.
  • Undemanding regarding soil (thrives on clay and sand).
  • Good drought tolerance.
  • Ideal for growing on pergolas.

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: Hungary
  • Breeder: Pál Kocsis (1917)
  • Parentage: 'Rosa menna di vacca' × 'Mathiász Jánosné muskotály'
  • Synonyms: 'Lord Rothermere', 'Ropogós muskotály' (Crispy Muscat)
  • Registration: 1963

Variety Characteristics

Vine
  • Vigor: Strong (vigorous growth). Shoots are sparser and partially spreading.
  • Training: Growing on pergolas is recommended.
  • Pruning: Short pruning is recommended.
Fruit (Cluster and Berry)
  • Clusters: Large (averaging 220 g), winged, medium dense to looser with a long stalk.
  • Color: Yellow, with a waxy bloom.
  • Taste: Excellent, delicate muscat aroma.
  • Usage: Primarily as a table grape for fresh consumption (typical for home gardens).
Resistance and Requirements
  • Climate: Tolerates drought well but has lower frost resistance (shoots are sensitive to frost). Requires very warm locations for the crop to ripen safely.
  • Diseases: Is susceptible to rot (requires protection in wet weather).
  • Soil: Undemanding (thrives on both clay and sand).
Harvest and Storage
  • Ripening time: Late variety. Starts to ripen from the end of September.
