Common Fig - Variety 'Dorée'

'Dorée', also known as the "Golden Drop" (Goutte d'Or), is one of the noblest and oldest French fig varieties. It is the embodiment of pure Mediterranean luxury – combining high productivity, excellent cold hardiness, and above all, a delicate, honey-sweet taste. Thanks to its compact growth and very early ripening of the summer crop, it is an ideal choice for growers in Central Europe who want to turn a sunny corner of their garden or terrace into a golden fruit paradise.

Common Fig (Ficus carica) 'Dorée'

The variety originates from France and is historically highly significant. It adapts perfectly to various regions – from hot Provence to the cooler Paris area. It is also known by the synonyms Goutte d'Or or Figue d'Or. It was first described by the French pomologist Merlet in 1667. Interestingly, ancient authors noted the tendency of its delicate skin to crack when fully ripe, visually reminding them of a "torn beggar's cloak."

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Very early ripening: The summer crop ripens as early as the beginning of July.
  • Excellent taste: Honey-sweet flavor with a very fine flesh texture.
  • Visual ripeness indicator: When fully ripe, a drop of sweet syrup appears on the eye of the fruit.
  • Compact growth: An ideal choice for pots and terraces.
  • High cold hardiness: Mature wood can withstand frosts down to -16 °C.
  • Versatile use: The autumn crop is excellent for home drying.
  • Self-fertility: The variety is parthenocarpic and starts fruiting very early.
Detailed variety description: Plant
  • Growth: Medium vigor, but mature trees naturally remain more compact and spreading (height and width range between 2 and 3 m). Thanks to this moderate growth, it is ideal for permanent container cultivation.
  • Leaves: They are medium to smaller, usually 3- to 5-lobed.
  • Fruiting onset: Very early and fast. It usually bears its first fruits in the 2nd to 3rd year after planting.
Fruits and flavor profile
  • The secret of the amber drop: The variety bears fruit twice a year. When fully ripe, a shiny drop of thick fruit syrup appears on the half-open eye (ostiole). This is an unmistakable visual signal that the fig has reached its maximum sugar content.
  • 1st crop (Summer / Breba): Ripens very early, at the beginning of July on last year's wood. The fruits are large (85 – 100 g), elongated pear-shaped with a large half-open eye. The delicate skin is golden-yellow with a pinkish tinge. The flesh is salmon to amber, extremely sweet with few seeds.
  • 2nd crop (Main autumn): Ripens from mid-August to October on new shoots. The fruits are smaller (70 – 80 g) and rounder. The skin is intensely golden, the flesh light pink to strawberry red with an excellent, concentrated flavor.
Growing characteristics and agrotechnics
  • Pollination: The variety is parthenocarpic (self-fertile) and belongs to the Adriatic botanical group. Fruits develop without the need for pollination by the fig wasp.
  • Resistance and requirements:
    • Cold hardiness: High. Well-rooted trees can handle frosts down to -16 °C. Ideally, plant 2 to 3-year-old trees in the open ground. In cooler locations, winter protection of the trunk is necessary until it reaches a diameter of 6 – 7 cm.
    • Tip for northern areas: Since the summer crop (Breba) ripens in early July, it is one of the earliest varieties. This is a huge advantage for cooler locations, as you can be sure the crop will fully ripen before the autumn cold arrives.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • Delicate skin: It is very fine and may tend to crack when fully ripe or with excess water.
  • Half-open eye: The eye on summer fruits is half-open, which can lead to moisture entering the fruit during prolonged rains.
  • Transport sensitivity: The fruits are delicate to transport, best for direct consumption straight from the tree.
