The Celeste variety has Mediterranean origins, but it is most popular in the southeastern United States, where it has been cultivated for centuries. In the US, it is also known as the “Sugar Fig” due to its exceptional sweetness. It is considered a classic “southern” fig and is one of the most reliable and hardy varieties, suitable even for slightly cooler areas.
Celeste grows slowly to moderately fast, has a compact habit and is ideal for growing in pots, containers or smaller gardens where it does not take up much space. Older plants in open ground grow to a height of 2–2.5 meters. Thanks to its adaptability, it is suitable for both permanent and temporary cultivation.
The fruits are small to medium-sized, pear-shaped with a short stem. They have smooth skin of a light brown to purple-bronze color and an average weight of around 30 g. The flesh is dense, pastel pink to red, with an exceptionally sweet taste, often reminiscent of honey or brown sugar. Figs are excellent for fresh consumption, drying, or processing into jams and desserts.
Celeste is a single-bearing variety, which means that it produces one main crop per year – from mid-August to October. It bears fruit reliably even in containers, and can produce its first fruits as early as the second year.
This variety is notable for its resistance to frost down to -15 °C. An exceptional feature is the closed ostiolum (a small opening on the underside of the fruit), which significantly reduces the risk of insect infestation or cracking of the figs in rainy weather. This makes the fruits durable and suitable for longer storage or transport.
Celeste is a once-bearing, very sweet, reliable, and hardy variety, suitable for growing in pots as well as in open ground. Thanks to its compactness and undemanding nature, it is an ideal choice for both novice and experienced growers.
