'Skaistė' (syn. Skaiste, translated from Lithuanian as Bright or Pure) is a valuable, winter-hardy table grape variety (Vitis hybrid) bred in Lithuania by Antanas Gailiūnas. Recognizing its unique qualities, it was officially included in the National Plant Genetic Resources of Lithuania (ID number AGB06159, declared on February 1, 2024). It belongs to a family of resilient northern varieties perfectly tailored for colder climates. It stands out for its large, sweet berries with thin skin, while its strong growth habit makes it an excellent choice for both table fruit production and ornamental coverage of pergolas, gazebos, and walls.
Key advantages of the variety:
- Thin skin: Unlike many cold-hardy northern grapes that develop thick skins, 'Skaistė' features a thin skin, making fresh eating very enjoyable.
- High winter hardiness: Withstands harsh winters easily, tolerating frosts down to -25 °C without injury. In sheltered spots, it generally requires no winter protection.
- Fully self-fertile: Does not require a cross-pollinator to produce a heavy crop (reliable fruiting even when planted as a single vine).
- Vigorous growth: Highly vital and fast-growing, making it ideal for rapid and dense coverage of pergolas, trellises, fences, and walls.
- National heritage: Carries significant genetic and historical value as part of Lithuania's plant heritage.
