In this installment, we present a detailed analysis of four exceptional table grape varieties – Bajkonur, Baron, Bažena, and Bogatyr. These are cultivars that represent the pinnacle of current breeding and are destined for success in our gardens.


1. Bajkonur

A very early blue variety that attracts attention mainly with its elegant, elongated berries resembling dates.

Variety Profile: Bajkonur

  • Origin: Talizman x Krasotka
  • Ripening Time: Very early (first half of August, 105–110 days)
  • Clusters: Large, 700–1000 g, medium density
  • Berries: Very large, 12–16 g, up to 4 cm long, date-shaped
  • Pulp: Exceptionally crisp and firm
  • Taste: Harmonious, sugar content 18–19 °NM
  • Hardiness: High resistance to diseases, frost down to -23 °C

Key Features: Unique date-like shape of the berries, high market value, and very early ripening. Clusters can hang on the vine for a long time without losing quality.


2. Baron

A very promising blue variety that combines vigorous growth, huge clusters, and exceptional resistance to adverse weather.

Variety Profile: Baron

  • Origin: Talizman x Velika
  • Ripening Time: Early (second half of August, 115–125 days)
  • Clusters: Large to very large, 800–1600 g
  • Berries: Very large, 15–20 g, oval, uniform
  • Pulp: Fleshy and juicy
  • Taste: Harmonious, refreshing, sugar content 19–21 °NM
  • Hardiness: High resistance to diseases, frost down to -23 °C

Key Features: The berries do not crack or rot even in rainy weather, which guarantees a reliable harvest.


3. Bažena

A very early white variety that will win over every grape lover with its unique flavor with notes of summer fruits, such as cherries or apples.

  • Origin: Podarok Zaporozhyu x Arkadia
  • Ripening Time: Very early (first decade of August, 105–110 days)
  • Clusters: Very large, 700–1500 g
  • Berries: Very large, 15–20 g, elongated-oval, yellow
  • Pulp: Fleshy and juicy
  • Taste: Unique fruity notes, tastes very sweet due to low acidity
  • Hardiness: Good resistance to diseases, high frost hardiness

Key Features: An extremely productive variety that requires crop load management to prevent overloading.


4. Bogatyr

Synonymous with gigantic fruits and top quality. This blue variety is among the 10 best creations of the Ukrainian breeder V. M. Kalugin.

  • Origin: Talizman x Velika
  • Ripening Time: Early (second half of August, 120–125 days)
  • Clusters: Large, 800–1200 g, with high market value
  • Berries: Huge, commonly 30 g and more, dark blue to black
  • Pulp: Very dense, crisp, and exceptionally juicy
  • Taste: Harmonious, perfectly balanced, one of the tastiest
  • Hardiness: High resistance to diseases and frost

Key Features: Extremely large berries of premium taste and quality, ideal as a luxury delicacy.
