Star is a key, patented (US PP10675) variety introduced to the market by the University of Florida in 1996. It was created by crossing the O'Neal variety with the Fla. 80-31 selection. It has long served as a quality standard against which newer varieties are compared.
Fruits (Quality and characteristics): The fruits are large, with an average weight of around 1.6 grams. Their greatest advantage is their exceptional firmness (rated 8 out of 9) and small, dry scar after the stem, which guarantees excellent shelf life and suitability for transport. The taste is pleasantly sweet with balanced acidity. A characteristic feature is the calyx of the fruit, which often forms a distinctive five-pointed star when ripe, giving the variety its name.
Plant (Cultivation characteristics): The bush grows moderately upright with good vitality. It requires a low number of cold hours (approximately 400 hours below 7 °C), which is slightly more than the latest varieties such as Primadonna or Millennia. In Florida conditions, it ripens in late April. Harvesting is very concentrated, with most of the crop ripening within 3 weeks. A key advantage of the Star variety is its ability to produce strong foliage even before full flowering. This provides the plant with sufficient energy for fruit development and significantly reduces the risk of stem blight, which affects the Misty variety, for example. The plant is relatively resistant to major diseases. It requires cross-pollination for maximum yield.
Advantages and disadvantages: The main advantage is the combination of high fruit quality, firmness, shelf life, and healthy growth habit of the plant. The disadvantage is only moderate fertility and slightly higher cold requirements compared to newer varieties.
