The blueberry cultivar Emil (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Emil') offers aromatic and tasty blueberries with a delicate acidity, which may remind of wild blueberries in their taste. Even these wild blueberries are more reminiscent than other varieties of Canadian blueberries. They are smaller and very dark. They are an excellent cultivar for those who prefer traditional wild blueberries to the large, popular Canadian blueberries, as they are more similar to them. They bloom during the first half of May with tiny white bell-shaped flowers with a slight red tinge at the edges. Fruits ripen during July-August. The fruit ripens gradually and in colder areas of Slovakia it may be slightly delayed compared to warmer areas. The Emil variety is a hardy shrub reaching a height of about 150 centimetres. The crown of the bush does not go wide, but keeps a more compact shape. The oblong leaves are roughly 3 centimetres long and change from green to yellow to orange in autumn. It does not normally fruit in the first year after planting. However, investing in it brings a harvest and growing experience the following year. Planting near another variety of blueberry brings a multiplication of yields. As is standard with blueberries, it requires an acidic pH and well-drained soil that is not fertilized with calcium-containing fertilizers. The variety does not require major pruning. In particular, we remove overgrown, excess branches on the mature plant, or diseased and dry branches, so that they do not become a haven for pests and diseases.
