Apple (Malus domestica) 'Ananasas'
An old Lithuanian variety with excellent flavour and large fruits.
'Ananasas', also known as 'Beržininkų ananasas', is an old Lithuanian autumn apple variety, valued for its large fruits with an excellent, sweet-tart, and very aromatic flavour. It is characterized by good disease resistance. Its main disadvantages are the very vigorous growth of the tree and a late entry into bearing.

Origin and Registration
- Country of origin: Lithuania
- History: An old variety, discovered in 1886 by A. Hrebnicky in Beržininkai.
- Synonym: Beržininkų ananasas
- Registration: Part of the national genetic resources since 2005.
Variety Characteristics
Tree
- Growth: Very vigorous.
- Crown: Globular to oblate, medium density.
- Pollination: It is cross-pollinated.
Fruit
- Size and weight: Large to very large, with a weight of around 155 g.
- Shape and colour: Round-conical, slightly ribbed. Greenish-yellow, turning yellow to ivory when fully ripe, with a light orange blush on the sunny side.
- Skin: Thicker.
- Flesh: Yellowish, firm, juicy.
- Flavour: Excellent, sweet-tart, very aromatic.
- Use: Versatile.

- Frost resistance: Medium to good.
- Disease resistance: Resistant to scab, fruit rot, and mildew.
Cultivation Recommendations
- It is recommended to grow it on dwarfing rootstocks.
- To ensure a harvest, it is essential to plant another apple variety nearby as a pollinator.
