Pear (Pyrus communis) 'Concorde'

High-quality winter variety suitable also for columnar growing.

'Concorde' is a popular winter pear variety created by crossing the classic varieties 'Conference' and 'Dicolor' (or 'Comice', sources vary). It is valued for its compact, slow growth, making it ideal for columnar cultivation even in small gardens or pots. The fruits are large, with buttery flesh and excellent taste.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Suitable for columnar growing (weak vigor).
  • Large fruits (approx. 220 g) with buttery flesh.
  • Excellent sweet and juicy taste.
  • High resistance to frost and fungal diseases (organic pear).
  • Long storage life (until February).

Origin and Registration

  • Country of origin: England (East Malling)
  • Parentage: 'Conference' × 'Dicolor' (or 'Comice')

Variety Characteristics

Tree
  • Vigor: Weak to medium strong, compact. Naturally tends towards columnar growth.
  • Cultivation: Suitable for small gardens, containers, and balconies.
Fruit
  • Size and Weight: Large, elongated, typically pyriform (approx. 220 g).
  • Skin: Green-yellow, yellow at maturity with a brownish-red blush.
  • Flesh: Firm, buttery (melting), juicy.
  • Taste: Delicious, sweet.
  • Usage: Fresh consumption, processing.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Resistance: Relatively resistant to frost (-30 °C) and fungal diseases (often requires no spraying).
  • Requirements: Requires a sunny location and nutritious, permeable soil. Fruits may lose flavor in cold years.
