Peach (Prunus persica) 'Harbinger'

A classic, very early yellow-fleshed peach variety, prized for its early ripening and excellent frost resistance.

The 'Harbinger' variety is one of the first peaches to open the fresh fruit season every year. It is highly popular for its ability to produce early and abundant crops even in cooler regions or after harsh winters. It features very attractive fruits and an excellent, refreshing taste, making it ideal for immediate summer consumption.

Main advantages of the variety:

  • Very early harvest: One of the earliest yellow-fleshed peaches on the market.
  • High frost resistance: Reliable yields protected against winter frosts.
  • Attractive appearance and taste: Beautiful red blush and juicy, melting flesh.
  • Health: Good resistance to bacterial spot.
  • Self-fertile with regular, high yields.

Origin and Registration

  • Origin: Canada (Ontario). Breeding institution: Harrow Research Station. Breeders: R. E. C. Layne and G. M. Weaver.
  • Crossing and Registration: A cross between 'Cherryred' and 'Jerseyland'. Introduced to the market in 1971.

Variety Characteristics

Tree
  • Vigor: Strong and vigorous.
  • Flowers: Bell-shaped, medium-sized.
  • Pollination: The variety is fully self-fertile.
Fruit
  • Size and Shape: Medium to smaller (approx. 5 to 5.7 cm in diameter), round to slightly oval.
  • Color and Skin: The yellow-green base color is about 80% covered with an attractive, mottled red blush. The skin is medium-thick and slightly fuzzy.
  • Flesh and Pit: The yellow flesh is medium-firm but beautifully melting and very juicy when fully ripe. Note: As is typical for very early varieties, the flesh clings to the pit (clingstone), and the variety has a tendency for split pits inside the fruit.
  • Taste and Use: Good, sweet-sour, refreshing, and aromatic. Primarily intended for fresh consumption.
Resistance and Requirements
  • Frost: Features high frost resistance in both wood and flower buds against winter freezes (a typical trait of the hardy Canadian "Har-" breeding series).
  • Diseases: Shows very good resistance to bacterial leaf spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. pruni).
Cultivation Recommendations
  • Fruit Thinning: The variety tends to set a very heavy crop. To prevent the fruits from remaining too small, it requires thorough early thinning.
Harvest
  • Harvest Time: Very early variety. Ripens approximately 33 days before 'Redhaven' (usually in the first half of July depending on the location).
