The Actinidia arguta Ken's Red kiwifruit cultivar impresses with its burgundy-red smooth fruit with the same coloured flesh and pleasant sweet taste. The representative of the well-known fruit has an unusual colour and, when cut crosswise, a slightly different flesh texture with a more pronounced pattern resembling a blossom. The unique kiwifruit is the work of the breeder Ken Nobbs from New Zealand, after whom it is named. He succeeded by crossing Actinidia arguta cordifolia and Actinidia melanandra. The popularity of kiwifruit growing is growing, not only for the taste of the fruit itself, but also for the choice of varieties. Ken's Red is one of the varieties that is attractive in appearance and taste and will be one of the favourites of growers. They are representative of the original exotic varieties with excellent frost tolerance characteristics.
Growing
The variety is easy to grow, but requires a sunny position. Hardiness is often quoted at -25°C, making it a hardy species. A climbing liana with dark green leaves during flowering with tiny white flowers in late May and during June, it has no shortage of pollinating insects. It should be grown near a support, raising the liana on a buttress, pergola, or vine-style. It is advisable to avoid disturbing the lower part of the plant.
Pruning should be carried out on dry and dead parts of the plant or, if necessary, after the plant has leafed out at the end of the growing season. However, shearing is not necessary - it is mainly used when there is a limitation in space or when there are obstructing shoots. In autumn the leaves turn yellow. The mature plant will exceed 4 metres in length, up to 10 metres. Over time, a harvest in excess of 10 kilograms can be expected from a mature plant. With an adult plant, therefore, we must also allow for a possible increase in weight. Actinidia do not have any major pests or diseases that would reduce yields and damage the plant.
Harvesting and processing
Female plants may bear fruit the second year after planting. However, this requires a male pollinator of Actinidia arguta Weiki M. One male plant can be enough to pollinate several female plants. The crop of very tasty fruits ripens gradually during September. Fruits of about 3-4 cm in size ripen gradually. However, it is advisable to pick the fruit just before it is fully ripe and soft, as is the custom with kiwifruit. In autumn, storage at room temperature may help ripening. Storing near bananas or apples can speed it up.
The tasty, sweet fruits then have a variety of uses. Because of its flavour and soft flesh, it is ideal for direct consumption, for making juices, cocktails, cakes, confectionery and ice cream, but it also has a wide range of uses in aesthetic cooking and confectionery production. The unusual appearance and attractive flavour of this kiwifruit cultivar make it an interesting addition to the garden and to the grower's offer. It can be an excellent component of a combination of several kiwifruit varieties.
