PIONEER is a Ukrainian cornelian cherry variety with large, tasty fruits that fall off when ripe.
Large-fruited cornelian cherry has an interesting growth habit, in the first year it can grow up to 50 cm high, but the older it gets, the slower it grows. It is ideal for growing in our area, but can tolerate higher altitudes. It grows upright.
Cornelian cherry is partially self-pollinated, but for a good harvest and large fruits it is advisable to have a pollinator in the form of another variety.
Flowering begins in March, and the flower tolerates spring frosts well.
Fruits are pear-shaped, red, very large and can weigh up to 7-10 g. In the center there is a stone. The taste is refreshingly sweet and sour, very tasty.
The fruits of cornelian cherry are ideal for direct consumption, they contain a lot of vitamins, minerals, anthocyanin pigments and polyphenols. During the ripening of the fruit requires adequate irrigation. They can also be boiled down to make juices, jams or liqueurs. They can be stored for about a month without losing quality.
PIONEER is a medium-early variety that ripens at the end of August.
The variety is very productive, a mature tree can bear up to 40 kg of fruit.
The cultivation of the cornelian cherry is undemanding. Already in the first year after planting, you can expect a harvest.
Cornelian cherry does not require pruning, but a topiary pruning can be performed. Cornelian cherry root shallow, so regular watering is advisable. It is recommended to fertilize with potassium when the leaves dry.
It is sufficiently resistant to pests and diseases.
