The 'Jeromine' apple tree is a Red Delicious variety, known for its attractive dark red fruit and excellent flavour. It is popular in commercial orchards and among gardeners for its rapid onset of fruiting, high yield and aesthetic fruit.
Jeromine' fruits are medium to large, 70-85 mm in diameter and develop their intense deep red colour in the early stages of ripening, allowing for earlier commercial harvesting. The flesh is white, firm and tender, with a balanced sweet flavour and minimal acidity, which is often rated as superior to other Red Delicious varieties. The fruit is suitable for direct consumption and, thanks to its excellent shelf life, will keep in the refrigerator until February and in a controlled atmosphere until June.
The 'Jeromine' tree grows moderately vigorously to weakly and starts flowering about 3 days before 'Golden Delicious'. It has a rapid onset of fruiting and produces high and regular yields. The tree is partially susceptible to alternation (alternate fruiting), so moderate fruiting is recommended. The variety is susceptible to scab and canker, which requires preventive measures and consistent care.
The M26 rootstock gives the tree a semi-dwarf character, which gives it a height of 2,5-3,5 m. This rootstock encourages early fruiting and high yields, but requires good quality, well-drained soils and support in the early years of growth. Trees on this rootstock are sensitive to excessive moisture and may be susceptible to root rot and scald.
When growing 'Jeromine' it is important to provide a sunny site with fertile soil. Regular pruning and the application of disease control measures will ensure healthy tree growth and a good quality crop. The variety is compatible with several pollinators such as 'Golden Delicious', 'Granny Smith', 'Gala' or 'Elstar', which improves yield.
The 'Jeromine' apple tree on the M26 rootstock is an ideal choice for intensive orchards and smaller gardens, where it will excel with its high quality fruit and compact growth.
