The 'Slovakia' variety is an interesting novelty among aromatic cider varieties. It was created by crossing Rizling and Ottonel, from which it inherited the flavour and muscat notes. The variety is mainly intended for wine processing - for the production of wine and fermented beverages. It is also suitable for direct consumption. The harvest is scheduled for the last week of September. The ideal harvest time for processing into wine is also planned according to the sugar content and the desired taste.
Growing Muscat grapes
This variety is suitable for milder and warmer areas with plenty of sunlight. Both Riesling and Ottonel are varieties that require sufficient light for optimum ripening, which is also true for 'Slovakia'. The soil should be permeable, light and well drained. Loamy-sandy, not clayey. Use a top dressing, especially during dry periods and for young plants that are not yet sufficiently rooted. Regular pruning of Muscadines should be moderate, without overloading the plant with fruit. This is primarily to ensure sufficient quality, sugar content and flavour, e.g. for the characteristics of the resulting wine or cider.
Like other muscadine varieties, the 'Slovensko' variety requires regular preventive protection against the most common vine diseases, in particular powdery mildew, phylloxera and botrytis (grey mould). Regular protection and prevention are recommended.
