'Brilliant' is an extremely attractive chokeberry variety that perfectly combines utility and ornamental functions in the garden. Although it provides healthy, vitamin-packed fruits, its greatest pride is the stunning autumn foliage, which literally glows in fiery red to burgundy shades.

Detailed variety description: Shrub and Growth

• Vigor: Medium-fast. Forms a low to medium-sized shrub. Usual height is 1 to 2.5 m (max. 3 m) and width 1 to 1.5 m. Often grown in standard form (grafted onto a rowan trunk).
• Habit: Upright, richly branched, and compact. Looks very elegant.
• Foliage (Main ornamental value): Leaves are deciduous, slightly lobed. During the season, they are light to medium green. In autumn comes the main show – leaves turn into intensely glowing, fiery red to burgundy shades.
• Blooming: Blooms around the turn of April and May (in May). The shrub is adorned with rich corymbs of pure white, striking flowers.
• Pollination: The variety is self-fertile.

Fruits

• Size and shape: Medium-sized (diameter 6-8 mm). They are slightly larger than blackcurrants, similar in size to edible rowanberries.
• Color: Dark purple, exceptionally even wine-red, glossy, and formed in large quantities.

• Taste: Sweet-tart, mildly spicy.

  • Use: Versatile. Can be consumed fresh (e.g., in fruit salads), but best suited for processing – excellent for jams, compotes, syrups, juices, and wines. They can also be dried very well (do not mold). They can be stored fresh for up to 2 months.
  • Use in the garden: Thanks to compact growth and autumn coloration, it is ideal for group plantings or free-growing hedges.
• Resistance and requirements:
  • Frost resistance: Extremely high. Fully frost-hardy to at least -34 °C (USDA zone 4). Can be grown without problems even in higher altitudes.
  • Diseases and pests: Excellent resistance to diseases and pests. Ideal for organic (BIO) cultivation without chemicals.
  • Location: Prefers full sun (where autumn coloration stands out best) or partial shade.
  • Soil: Absolutely undemanding to soil. Mycorrhizal products can be used at planting for better rooting.
  • Agrotechnics (Pruning): Tolerates pruning at the end of winter. To maintain a nice shape and vitality, regular pruning (once a year) and rejuvenation pruning every 2-3 years are recommended. Appreciates watering during extreme drought.
